Troll Under Bridge May Return To Brookside

A second bridge like this one will connect Brookside to Winslow Augustine Park.

Brookside neighbors will have a shorter trip to Winslow Augustine Park and Wilmot Road once a new pedestrian bridge connecting the two is installed next year.

And young Brooksiders might rediscover the troll under the bridge.

The City Plan Commission, during its monthly meeting at City Hall Wednesday, voted unanimously in favor of the installation of the bridge and new walkway that will once again connect the Brookside public-housing community with the popular park in the shadow of West Rock on the city’s west side of town with the popular park.

Radcliffe: Experienced troll-spotter.

Young Brookside residents might return to playing a game that Commissioner Leslie Radcliffe said she played there as a child. But that will depend on whether the new bridge has a bit of an arch like the one she remembers.

What’s it going to look like?” she queried City Engineer Giovanni Zinn. I ask only because I was born and raised there and the bridge that we used to have was very traditional looking and had a little arch in it. We used to play with the troll under the bridge and all. Is there going to be a troll under the bridge?”

I’m not familiar with the troll under the bridge,” Zinn said.

What he is familiar with is the style of bridge that the city plans to install to connect the housing community to the park. It will be a manufactured Pratt Truss pedestrian foot-bridge similar to the one the city installed last spring to connect Winslow Augustine Park to the Brennan Rogers School campus. The bridge is a fairly easy install that doesn’t involve too much heavy equipment and causes a minimal amount of disturbance to the wetlands. It will be installed using existing abutments from the bridge that used to be there.

Zinn told the commission that in the request for proposals for the bridge manufacturer the city is looking at models that could provide more of the arch and aesthetic that Radcliffe referenced.

Ultimately, the biggest gain will be shortening the now 15 minutes or more it takes to get from Brookside to Wilmot Road. Residents currently must walk all the way up Brookside Avenue, then up to Wilmot Road. Once the bridge is built over Belden Brook, people will be able to walk from Augustine Way to the bridge and over into the park. Zinn said the city also will be installing a bump out, a raised crosswalk, and a rectangular flashing beacon because it will be a midblock crossing.

Westville Alder and Commissioner Adam Marchand said Wednesday that he can attest that people who wanted to avoid the long walk have worn a small footpath and created a makeshift bridge of sorts out of discarded plywood and tires. He has ridden his bike out that way and seen it for himself.

It was not easy,” he said of traversing the path. You’re walking over pieces of plywood that had been balanced on rocks and maybe stepping on a tire.”

See, if you’d grown up there you’d know you have to jump,” Radcliffe teased.

Marchand said the new bridge and walkway would certainly be a big improvement for the residents.

It would be a lot safer, less harmful to the environment to have something built instead of people just stomping about like I was,” he said.

As a condition of the approval, City Plan staff has asked the city to secure an easement from the housing authority and provide for the seeding of the disturbed areas of the wetland. Zinn said the easement is already in the works and city plan staff has provided information about a suggested seed mix.

Zinn said the bridge installation will happen sometime in the spring — just in time for a troll or two to move in underneath.
