Buses Get Smart

The governor announced Wednesday that he’s taking New Haven’s advice: His administration will equip 500 CT Transit buses with GPS devices so riders can track the vehicles’ real-time location.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy made that announcement during a visit to the Department of Vehicles office in Hamden.

Mayor Toni Harp and her transit chief, Doug Hausladen, began publicly calling for the GPS tracking system in January 2014 as part of a broader call for drastic improvements in the bus system. Harp called a better-functioning urban mass-transit system a civil right.” (Read about that here.)

Malloy called the GPS addition a smart, strategic step” in modernizing the bus system.

We want the CTtransit experience to be easy and user-friendly, and the addition of this technology will make travel more convenient and reliable,” he said.

He first promised to add the GPS service back in January.

Now on to more frequent service and schedules that make sense, so people can travel reasonably through town after 5 p.m. and to suburban jobs. Read below for previous stories about the deep dysfunctionality of the bus system and previous denials by Malloy’s transit chief that the problems exist:
