Will These Guys Last 36 Hours?

Update: As of 8:19 a.m. Wednesday, this year’s Great Give reported collected 6,049 gifts totaling $769,375.83. With 11 hours and 41 minutes to go, read on …

Jerry Lewis may no longer keep us glued to the tube for his charitable telethons, but Eugene Driscoll and Ethan Fry have arrived in the house.

Driscoll and Fry put out the not-for-profit Valley Independent Sentinel (sister online daily to the New Haven Independent). They summoned Lewis’s ghost in participating in this year’s Community Foundation Great Give” fundraiser.

The pair decided to broadcast live over a webcast from their Ansonia office for 36 hours straight to pitch people to donate to both the Valley Indy and a long list of other Valley not-for-profits. They began Tuesday broadcasting at 8 a.m. sharp.

Will they make it all 36 hours? What will they talk about all that time? Click here to watch and find out.

No tears yet.

But guests galore are lined up.

Each year the Community Foundation hosts the Great Give, in which not-for-profits throughout the region collect donations onilne — with the most successful ones earning matching prizes from the Foundation. While the Valley Indy’s webcast is a first, dozens of other agencies have been blast e‑mailing supporters to urge them sign up during the 36-hour marathon, which ends at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

By 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Great Give already reported having received 2,958 gifts totaling $288,249.56.

One stand-out pitch came from Justin Elicker, who made the above video on behalf of the Land Trust, which he runs.

If you want to support either the Valley Independent Sentinel or the New Haven Independent or the Branford Eagle, type in the site name or the formal name of our not-for-profit, the Online Journalism Project. Thank you as always for your support!

And if you happen to be on Main Street in Ansonia, drop in and say hi to Eugene and Ethan. Fresh pizza would be a nice touch, too.
