We have a winner: New Havener Jennifer Hirsch solved a riddle left by an anonymous cash stasher and pocketed 56 dollars.
Hirsch collected the money Thursday afternoon, after New Heaven, the anonymous tweeter who has been hiding cash around town, revealed where he or she hid the latest envelope of bills.
New Heaven started giving away cash earlier this month, picking up on a trend started by an anonymous cash-stasher in California. New Heaven has been hiding envelopes around town ever since, usually containing twenties and two-dollar bills.
“The next three tweets will give you all you need to know to find the [money]!” New Heaven tweeted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
The three tweets that followed contained a photograph, a sequence of numbers, and what appears to be a word-search puzzle.
Here’s the photo:
Here’s the sequence of numbers: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 44, 48, 55
And here’s the word-search:
Hirsch solved the mystery by first visiting the sign pictured in the top photograph, then copying down the 4th, 8th, 15th, 16th … words. She then crossed those terms off the word search to reveal the envelope’s location: “Light the back of whale,” referring to the “Yale Whale,” the university’s hockey rink.
Thursday’s was Hirsch’s third discovery of a New Haven cash prize, according to a tweet from the anonymous benefactor.
Man, I must have missed it!
I biked up and scoured for a while.
Didn't solve the whole puzzle, but all of a sudden the words 'back of the whale' stood out, and off I went....
