An arson squad was called in after a Mercedes burst into flames in a City Point driveway.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery.
Firefighters reported to 96 Greenwich Ave at 12:44 a.m. to find a 1996 Mercedes E320 in the driveway, fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters beat down the blaze before it spread to a nearby house. A call went out to the city arson squad. Investigators found an empty gas can on the treebelt of 88 Greenwich Ave.
Victimless Drive-By
A witness told police he heard six or seven gunshots on Davenport Ave near Winthrop at 1:27 a.m. Thursday. He said he looked out the window and saw a black and tan SUV and a black Cadillac flee the scene. No other witnesses, victims or suspects were found.
Yalie Mugging Attempt
In other news, according to Yale Police Chief James Perrotti:
Early Thursday at about 3:15 am, a Yale undergraduate student was walking on cross campus near Calhoun College when a man came up on a bike. He was wearing a black puffy jacket and white baseball cap. He tried, but failed, to rob the student.
Drug Busts
Lastly, according to Avery, the city’s branch of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force made two drug busts on Tuesday:
A 43-year-old man was arrested near Dixwell Avenue at Ford Street. Seized were 14 bags of heroin weighing approximately 4.7 grams, 1 gram of cocaine and $641.00 cash.
And a 44-year-old man was arrested in the Hill for allegedly making a hand-to-hand sale of cocaine near Howard Avenue and Minor Street.
