Car Slams Scooter

In daylight people often see the man riding around town on his yellow scooter. In the darkness at the intersection of Whalley Avenue and the Boulevard, a driver of a Ford vehicle apparently did.
The driver, travelling eastbound on Whalley, hit t’s he manmotorized scooter around 9 p.m. Thursday, then sped from the scene, according to Lt. Ray Hassett. The scooter was heading northbound on the Boulevard.
Hassett said the cops are looking for a “brown or burgundy Ford product.”
Hassett said the scooter was destroyed in the accident. He said the scooter’s driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. “He was talking at the scene,” Hassett said.
The victim, a Willoughby’s regular, is known for riding his scooter around town in all weather, said Hassett (pictured). He called it “not a great idea” to scoot around in icy conditions in the dark.
Police officials were unable Thursday night to identify the victim or give his age. Twenty-one hours after the accident officials said they were still unable to offer information on the victim because an officer had gone home without finishing filing a report, and the officer could not be reached.

Is it a bad idea?
Does the man have lights on his scooter?
If not, I can understand the concern the officer raises, but it looks like the scooter is legal for street usage & is equipped with lights.
It’s dissapointing that this is the NHPD response to being run over by a driver. It’s funny that cyclists hear the same story—even in broad daylight, in the summer.
“Maybe it’s not such a good idea to bicycle.”
If you refuse to punish people who break the law, because they “didn’t mean to”, no one has any incentive to try to follow the law. I hate to sound cynical, but if you’ve logged enough hours on a bike, you realize that even if 100 people follow the law of their own accord, it only takes 1 lazy driver to end someone’s life.
