He Reached Through The Yale Bubble

Lucy Gellman Photo

A young student who wants to use technology as a democratizing factor. A rising investment banker whose faith was tested during a summer internship at a large firm. A college freshman who hadn’t forged a relationship with Jesus Christ, but wanted to.

They are all united by one person, through whom they have learned about Jesus Christ in a different way. His name is Julian Reid, and he’s the campus minister at Yale Christian Fellowship, active around the city as a member of Elm City Vineyard and a freelance jazz musician.

He appeared as a guest on the Tom Ficklin show, sharing how the transition from extroverted Yale undergraduate to faith-based leader in the university community has shaped his own faith, and propelled him toward graduate education at divinity school.

I had the privilege and honor of growing up in a home … that was very steeped in the bible and love for God and desire to be like him,” he shared on the show. My faith in college started to grow and develop the robust structure … I started asking questions more about what the heart of God was and is. As I started to be challenged in terms of my character not founded on a love foundation … I started to have my presumptions and presuppositions really dismantled by others around me really indicting me for not loving others and not loving God as maybe I should.”

That change, which he credits largely to questions that his then-girlfriend and now-wife Carmen was asking him, has propelled him forward, and helped him define what kind of faith he wants to teach, and ultimately lead with.

To listen to the full episode, which also includes a shout out to Reid’s Chicago home and statement — patently false — that deep dish pizza trumps New Haven’s finest pies, click on the audio above or find it in iTunes or any podcatcher under WNHH Community Radio.”
