Park On The Odd Side

New Haven has banned even-side-of-the-street parking Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., as the city continues to dig out from Tuesday night’s snowstorm.

The city also listed streets on which cars will be towed for parking on the even side of the street.

Tuesday night’s storm dumped 19 inches of snow on New Haven, making it the city’s largest storm since 1978, Mayor John DeStefano announced Wednesday afternoon. He urged New Haveners to take their cars off the streets to make it easier to clear out the snow.

On Thursday, more details were released:

The City of New Haven will be enforcing an even side parking ban tomorrow, Friday, January 14 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. All residents are being asked to park their cars on the odd numbered side of streets (houses ending in 1,3,5,7,9) to allow the Department of Public Works to plow the even side of roads.

This parking ban is necessary to enable the emergency passage of vehicles on City roads. While all residents are strongly encouraged to park on the odd side of the street tomorrow, cars in violation of the parking ban located on the following streets will be subject to towing:

Sheldon Terrace
Orchard between Chapel and George
Scranton
John Daniels/Adam Clayton Powell Drive
Monroe
Welcome
Revere
Davenport between Cedar and Vernon
Hurlburt
Button
Putnam
Frank
Lines
Foster
Nicoll
Cottage
Avon
Linden
Eagle
Nash
Livingston between Willow and East Rock
Bishop
Lawrence
Anderson
Canner between Nicoll and Whitney

Residents of the East Rock streets listed are encouraged to park at the lot at the corner of Mitchell Drive and Willow Street anytime after 8 p.m. tonight if necessary. The City of New Haven will also be towing vehicles throughout the City that are located within 25 feet of an intersection, bus stop or fire hydrant.

A Tuesday release offered the following information:

Residents are asked to pay attention to local news stations or check the city’s web site at www.cityofnewhaven.com or call 946‑7669 (snow) for updated information.

A phone notification message will be issued to all residents whose contact information is listed in the city’s database. Anyone wishing to receive phone or text notification of parking bans and other restrictions associated with the storm must opt-in to the system by visiting the city website at: http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/emergencyinfo/optin.asp

All New Haven property owners should know that clearing the snow on sidewalks and around their property is their responsibility. This rule applies to both commercial and residential property owners and it requires that sidewalks be cleared within 24 hours of the end of a storm. To avoid fines, residents are encouraged to maintain their property and pay attention to parking bans during inclement weather.

Please note: parking garages and downtown off-street parking lots are still open during snow emergencies. Residents are encouraged to use these facilities as an alternative to parking on the street.

Please note: It is against the law to throw or plow snow into the streets.

Mayor DeStefano urges the public’s cooperation in complying with the parking ban in order to assist the city’s plowing and snow removal operations.

A release Wednesday added this emergency info:

Residents are encouraged to contact the City’s Emergency Operations Center at 203 – 946-8221 with any storm-related concerns. The Emergency Operations Center will remain open overnight. Additionally, representatives from the City’s Livable City Initiative are available to provide assistance to New Haven residents who are experiencing a loss of heat or other essential utilities. LCI representatives can be reached at 203 – 946-6237 for housing utility emergencies.”
