City Honored as Employer of The Disabled

The City of New Haven Tuesday received the National Employer of the Year Award from the Multiple Sclerosis Society in the category of 100 employees and over. After competing for the state award, which it won in October, the city advanced to the national level of competition, which it also won for “providing a variety of resources and accommodations to individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.”

Mayor John DeStefano accepted the plaque at a ceremony in the City Hall atrium from Lisa Gerroll, president of the Connecticut Chapter of the MS Society. “The City of New Haven has certainly gone above and beyond the call of duty to institute policies that give access to all within their work force,” said Gerroll, pictured at middle right in the above photo with city disabilities chief Michelle Duprey, city employee Lynn Lions, and Mayor DeStefano. “Since 25 percent of New Haven residents identify as handicapped, we embrace their talent as a strength — strong in character and capabilities,” DeStefano said. There were two main factors that DeStefano said have contributed to the city’s strong disabilities office: “hiring good staff and giving them visibility and support.” “The City of New Haven is a premier community that encourages accessibility for disabled people in the community and the workforce. They had a really remarkable record of support for their disabled employees,” said Kara Preston, director of communications for the MS Society. The nomination for the award came from Lions, who couldn’t “thank the city enough for the support they gave” her. After going blind in one eye, Lions was given time off on Friday afternoons to receive shots and given flexibility in her work schedule to attend her many doctors appointments and to take time off due to fatigue. “We have policies in place to guide us and help people with disabilities stay on the job,” Michelle Duprey said. Her friends from Yale, Judy York in the Student Disabilities Services office, and Glenn Weston-Murphy, a professor of engineering design, came out to “support the fact that people with disabilities have a place to work in the City of New Haven.”
