Police: Civilian Drives At Cops, Gets Shot

A 50-year-old Branford man is in Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds after a confrontation with police ended with him getting shot.

So reported police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

Here’s what happened, according to Hartman:

Guilford police put out a bulletin for the man early Tuesday morning after he allegedly stole a car in that town.

At some point after 6 a.m. he turned up in New Haven. Officers found him at 55 Church St., where he allegedly committed another robbery.

He drove away from the cops. Officers pursued him. Then they called off the chase, deeming it too dangerous.

He was believed to be driving the stolen car.

Police kept looking for him. Soon after, officers found the car backed into a garage at the Church Street South housing complex across from Union Station. The suspect was inside.

Officers got out of their cars. Just then the man alleged backed into two police cars, trying to run the officers down. The cars were badly damaged. The cops were not hurt.

One officer fired his gun at the suspect. The suspect was hit.

He was lighting something to smoke in the car. We don’t know it was,” when officer arrested him, Hartman said.

The man was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Acting Police Anthony Campbell said the man was shot once in the arm, and the bullet passed through. He said the man is in stable condition.
As is protocol with officer-involved shootings, the state police came to the scene and will conduct an investigation, Trooper Kelly Grant said.

The suspect has an extensive criminal record, according to the state judicial database, including convictions on narcotics and larceny offenses committed in Orange, Milford, Branford, Hamden, and West Haven.

This is the second officer-involved shooting in less than a month. On Aug. 16, an officer shot a 38-year-old Fair Haven man in the leg when he allegedly rushed at him with a knife with the hope of committing suicide by cop.” A state investigation later concluded that shooting was reasonable and justified.”
