Food Mart Clerk Shot Dead

Someone shot a clerk to death in the Annex Monday night.

Police got the call at 7:37 p.m., according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

They arrived at the Pay Rite Food Mart at at 262 Forbes Ave., by the corner of Fulton, to find that the clerk, Sanjay Patel, 39, had been shot at least four times — three times to the chest, once in the hand.

He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m.

Police hadn’t yet determined the motive Monday night, but it was looking as though two men were involved in the attack and they may have been engaged in a robbery, Hartman said.

Witnesses told Investigators they’d heard gunfire and seen two masked men, clad in all dark clothing running from the store, south on Fulton Terrace. They weren’t able to further describe the suspects,” Hartman reported in a release.

Update: The police Tuesday afternoon released new details of the killing: Two masked men stole some money and a box of cigars from Patel, who was alone in the store at the time. Then both fired on Patel, one with a revolver, one with a semi-automatic handgun. They fled the store on foot.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (203) 946‑6304.
