Cop Arrested

A New Haven cop has been placed on administrative leave after a surveillance video showed him stealing two envelopes of payroll cash from a local restaurant, according to police.

The envelopes contained several hundred dollars,” stated police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

The arrested officer has been charged with sixth-degree larceny. The restaurant owner asked the police not to release the name of the restaurant; the arrest warrant is sealed.

The officer who is 34, appears on surveillance twice. First, in uniform and on duty. The second time, in civilian clothes and not on duty,” according to a release issued Friday morning by Hartman. Chief [Dean] Esserman ordered [him] to be placed on administrative paid leave.”

In other police news, officers arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the Tuesday afternoon shooting of a 27-year-old man on Arthur Street in the Hill. The arrestee, a convicted felon, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit,” Hartman stated. The victim remains in stable but critical condition” at the hospital.
