Cop Shoots Man At Ruoppolo Manor

A cop shot a 38-year-old man in Fair Haven Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. at Ruoppolo Manor, a public-housing facility for the elderly and the disabled located at 480 Ferry St. in Fair Haven.

A woman who lives at the facility called 911 asking for help with her son, who she said was suicidal, according to New Haven police Lt. Tony Reyes. The mother and the son live at the facility, in separate apartments, Reyes said.

Cops and firefighters arrived at the scene. Cops were speaking to the mother in the lobby when the son charged at an officer with a knife, Reyes said, and the officer fired his weapon.

He identified the victim as 38-year-old Roberto Ursini. Ursini has been taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment.

He was alert and conscious leaving the scene,” said mayoral spokesman Laurence Grotheer.

The identity of the officer was not immediately available.

The state police arrived at the scene to investigate. Under orders from the state’s attorney’s office, local police are to call in state investigators whenever an officer shoots someone.
