Cutie Petutie Makes The Cut

Watch out New Haven! Idol is in town — Audubon Idol that is.
Randy isn’t around, but Georgie may be a tad bit cooler dawg. The Neighborhood Music School’s Summer Arts Program hosts Audubon Idol once a week for the children who attend the five-week session.
The performances take place at lunchtime in the courtyard behind the school.
At a recent show, “six-year old” Cutie Petutie walked onto the stage with her dog Cupcake, her hair in pig tails, and a pink tutu she got from the art room nervous as ever. She opened her mouth and bellowed out “My Favorite Things” from the Sounds of Music, while her 12-year-old brother Muffin accompanied her on the piano. Click on the play arrow at the top of this story to watch a snippet.
Cutie Petutie is actually a camp staffer named Sabrina Marques; Cupcake and Muffin are Logan and Alex. Though Sabrina and Alex, far from young children, are brother and sister. Marques is a fourth-year art director who was beyond excited that she made it to the second round for Audobon Idol. What would she sing for the next round: “I’m not exactly sure,” she said. “Maybe something from the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou.”
According to Marques this is the third year of Audubon Idol. “We had a Gong Show awhile back, but that was no go.”
Another character was Linnea Rodriguez, 19. Rodriguez kept her real name as her stage name, but when performing she is Linnea, 13 √Ǭæ years old. Being a first-year art director and not being prepared, Linnea did the only thing she could thing of — bust into a Freestyle. Click on the play arrow to watch.
Rodriguez’s rap skills and individuality got her a quick ticket to the next round. “This is my first year, and it’s nerve-wrecking being on stage performing in front of a bunch of kids,” she confessed.
Bry’onna Mention, a student at Career High School, is a summer intern at the Independent.
