Dadio Retires

Thomas MacMillan Photo “I didn’t think I’d get there,” Lt. Lisa Dadio told a recent midnight line-up she was running. She was referring to lasting on the job for 20 years. She wasn’t looking to top that number—a week later she worked her last day.

Dadio is one of seven cops whose retirements come up before the Board of Police Commissioners for approval Tuesday night, according to the meeting agenda.

Another is Assistant Chief Patrick Redding. New Chief Dean Esserman recently asked all the assistant chiefs to move on so he could pick his own team. (Read about that here.) Assistant Chief Petisia Adger at first didn’t respond to the request, but subsequently put in for retirement, too.

Redding worked his last day last Friday. Most on the list have also worked their last days already. The list includes community services Officer and former department spokesman Joe Avery (read about his retirement here); former Assistant Chief John Velleca, who announced the decision back in December; Officer David Coppola, who was given the choice of whether to retire or face possible internal disciplinary charges; Detective Burnell Burrell; and Officer Eric Jones.

The unfunded liability of the pension continues to grow…does anyone care?

...everyone who collects a pension has paid into their pension ... IF the city’s investing properly, the retired are collecting what they invested plus interest gained, and what others are currently putting into the pension fund ... How is that you come up with “unfunded”? ...

Congratulations Lisa for finally getting out of here, Good luck!

“Civilian With A Pension”: The annual report on the Policemen’s & Firemen’s Pension Fund that you should be receiving (if you are in that fund) spells out the financial condition of the pension…The unfunded liability grows if the Cities contribution does not accurately reflect what the pension actuary states should be in the budget each year to properly fund the pension. Assumptions are made such as what rate of return can the investments expect. The high number of people retiring at an early age makes a major impact on the pension. Take some time and study the plan and the formula that the pension is based on. The investment firms do not work for nothing. That expense also comes out of the pension assets. It can be complicated to understand just by looking at numbers.

Giving the police and fire departments outrageous pensions was Destefano’s way of avoiding pay raises.  Every contract has his signature. He and his cronies believed the exorbitant stock market returns would last forever. ...

Consider this: many of the cops who are retiring as soon as possible are doing so because of department mismanagement.  I can tell you from personal experience that I myself planned on driving a police car around until they pryed me out out of it, and the taxpyers were getting a lot of bang for their buck when I did.  Many love or loved the job and were great at it, but don’t/didn’t want to deal with the politics any more.  So instead of paying me 65 or 75k a year base (and getting about 20-30k back every year from asset forfeiture cases generated), I now sit home and in tropical destinations collecting a nice pension, which based on life expectancy is worth well over $2,5000,00.00. Best of luck Lisa!
