Echo From Floor As DeLauro Calls For Pay Equity

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—As Rosa DeLauro took a stand for equal pay on a national stage, a woman who toiled in a New Britain hardware factory sang out a mighty “all right!”
Shirley Black, a 72-year-old New Britain councilwoman, was one of the two dozen Connecticut delegates who got to the Time Warner Cable Arena in time Tuesday to see Connecticut U.S. Rep. DeLauro of New Haven take the stage on the first night of the Democratic National Convention here.
DeLauro stepped up to the podium at around 7:25 p.m. Tuesday along with a line of House women. Their task: argue why women need to reelect President Barack Obama, as women’s issues take center stage in the run-up to the November contest against Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Democrats are hoping to maintain a wide gender-gap advantage over Romney excaerbated by some Republicans’ (including running mate Paul Ryan’s) calls for banning abortion even in cases of rape and incest.
Black stood up in the stands to applaud DeLauro.
“I’m Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, and we have work to do. America’s women still make just 77 cents for every dollar men earn,” DeLauro said.
“It’s even tougher for women of color,” DeLauro said.
“That’s right,” Black attested.
Black, who’s from Georgia, has lived in New Britain for the past 50 years. She spent 39 years working in the hardware factory, making screws and doorknobs for Corbin Ruswwin. She was part of a union, so she got regular raises. But she said the men still made more than she did for the same work. She said men made up to $18 to $20 per hour, while she never broke $15 an hour.
“Those pennies add up to a real difference to middle-class families: trying to pay their bills, trying to get ahead, trying to achieve the American dream,” DeLauro said.
Black nodded. She retired in 2002 from the factory. Her husband died 12 years ago, so she’s been supporting herself since then.
“We’ve been making progress,” DeLauro said. “The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, to give victims of pay discrimination their day in court, was the first bill President Obama signed into law.
“Yeah! All right! ” cried Black.
“Now we want to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act: real protections to ensure equal pay for equal work. The Democratic women of the House are committed to closing the wage gap for American families to move America forward,” DeLauro said.
“I’m retired, but I still say, ‘Yeah!’” Black said. She said she hadn’t heard the details of the act, but she supports the concept.
Black called DeLauro’s speech “fantastic.” She said if the Republicans beat President Obama in November, women will be at risk—especially seniors like her who rely on Medicare and Social Security.
“I don’t want no voucher to get my medicine,” she said. “I can’t afford to pay a whole bunch of money” for medications.
She said the Social Security safety net needs to be retained: “I want to live comfortably. We’ll lose that if we lose Obama.”

DeLauro: “America’s women still make just 77 cents for every dollar men earn.” REALITY: “The Paycheck Fairness Act… is based on a misapplied statistic, that women earn 77 cents on a man’s dollar. This is true when comparing all women’s wages with all men’s wages, but not when comparing men and women with the same experience in the same job. The 77 cent statistic combines men and women who work in different jobs with different numbers of hours.” http://www.usnews.com/debate-club/should-the-senate-pass-the-paycheck-fairness-act/paycheck-fairness-act-is-based-on-a-misapplied-statistic

Threefifths: “So anybody seen a copy of the African American platform…” Wayne Winsley is African American—and running on the GOP ticket (against long-time incumbent Rosa DeLauro). So, after you’ve recover from the automatic gag reflex, just listen to what Mr. Winsely has to say in the first 8 ½ minutes of this interview—particularly the insight he had as a youth growing up in the Cleveland housing projects: http://ct-n.com/ondemand.asp?ID=8108

BLACK, like most Democrats is totally misinformed. This is a lie! The Republicans don’t want to take Social Security and Medicare away from you! Moreover—the DEMOCRATS, like DELAURO already did!!! OUT THE TRUTH! Obama and DeLauro, through Obamacare took $700 billion away from Medicare.
ROSA DELAURO IS AGAINST SENIORS!!! SPREAD THE WORD!!! Against seniors “Oh I get it. We pay for Sandra Fluke’s birth control and give up the hip operation—-because Fluke’s is “preventive health,” and there won’t be enough money for the hip operation. So the board of bureaucrats will say—NOT PHYSICANS—in Washington. Paid for by taxpayers. Do you know about the “QOL’S”? “QOL’S: refers to quality of life scores. An “independent” board IPAB will look at a patient’s “QOL’S” and will cap total sums Medicare recipients can receive for care, and thus make decisions based purely on cost rather than need options. It basically will “balance” needs of seniors with “low quality of life” prospects by DENYING ESSENTIAL CARE TO SENIORS—in order to give Fluke her pills. The government takes primary responsibility for deciding what health care services its citizens are allowed to consume. The government, then, decides whether each individual’s health care is worth the price. This is why the concept of the government “death panel” expresses a fundamental truth about Obamacare. WAKE UP SENIORS!”
22 YEARS IS ENOUGH!! DUMP DELAURO!! WE WANT WAYNE HE WILL KEEP SOCIAL SECURITY!

Christopher Schaefer made good points. I can only add.
See “Will the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Help Women?”
http://tinyurl.com/6qdq5t3
Excerpt:
An example showing why women average less pay even in the same profession:
“In 2011, 22% of male physicians and 44% of female physicians worked less than full time, up from 7% of men and 29% of women from Cejka’s 2005 survey.” -http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2012/03/26/bil10326.htm
On the “plight” of women, see also:
http://www.she-conomy.com/facts-on-women
“Over the next decade, women will control two thirds of consumer wealth in the United States and be the beneficiaries of the largest transference of wealth in our country’s history. Estimates range from $12 to $40 trillion. Many Boomer women will experience a double inheritance windfall, from both parents and husband.”

Maybe Congresswoman DeLauro can also help bring her own salary back down to earth. She currently ears four times as much per year as the average New Haven citizen, and that’s not accounting for her generous benefits.

@Christopher Schaefer
Both parties have been selling Black people dreams.
Both political parties have betrayed the cause of justice. The Democrats have betrayed it by capitulating to the prejudice, and undemocratic practices of the Southern Dixiecrats . The Republicans have betrayed it by capitulating to the blatant hypocrisy of the right wing reactionary Northerners.

Curious: “Maybe Congresswoman DeLauro can also help bring her own salary back down to earth. She currently earns four times as much per year as the average New Haven citizen”. Actually her income is considerably more than “four times as much per year as the average New Haven citizen”. During the recession, when most of us were LOSING money, her personal wealth GREW by over $2 MILLION per year: http://www.conntact.com/government/11691-rosas-not-in-the-red.html How? The self-dealing relationship with her husband, whereby campaign contributions ultimately end up in her own pocket: http://www.humanevents.com/2011/10/04/delauro-campaign-finances-raise-questions/ But as long as DeLauro can continue to fool voters into believing that she “feels their pain” she’ll continue to be re-elected. Of course, it’s easy for Rosa DeLauro to theorize about solving hunger, poverty & jobs issues as she sits in her $1 Million home in New Haven (well, when she isn’t eating gourmet meals from Schneider’s & Federal City Caterers http://www.publicintegrity.org/2010/10/05/2460/political-inaction-committees-how-political-action-committees-are-spending-your ). Wayne Winsely stands for a fluid society in which EVERYONE has the possibility of becoming successful. Rosa DeLauro stands for cronyism—the substitution of political influence for free markets. By shifting power to government, cronyism makes political power more important and increases the competition for that political power via campaign contributions. Thus, to stay in power Rosa DeLauro must continue to make unsustainable promises to her supporters. For example, see Rosa DeLauro’s major contributors: http://www.opensecrets.org/politicians/pacs.php?cycle=2012&cid=N00000615&type=I She supports government created jobs—and her biggest supporter is Big Labor. She supports government-funded healthcare—and her 2nd biggest supporter is the healthcare industry. The way to reduce or end cronyism is to reduce or end that government power. Wayne Winsley understands that, if govt. will stop giving political paybacks to ALL industry—and only provide a safety net to those who truly need it—we finally can get this country back on its feet. And the way to accomplish this is for voters to dump crony, lifetime, self-serving career politicians—like Rosa DeLauro.
