Dog Owner Charged With Cruelty

An emaciated Pit Bull terrier lay motionless on the ground with “hundreds of flies” swarming around it. A second “very thin” terrier was tied to a tree, stuck by some overgrown bushes, “unable to move more than a couple of feet in either direction,” no food or water in sight.
The dogs appeared to have been neglected for weeks.
Two cops came across that scene in a Wolcott Street backyard in Fair Haven late Wednesday afternoon, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman.
A child had approached the officers to alert them to the scene.
After discovering the scene, the officers called in the police department’s Animal Control Division, which took the dogs into its care.
Meanwhile, the officers, Michael Fumiatti II and Matthew Stevens, tracked down the dogs’ owner, a 32-year-old man who lives across town on Greenwich Avenue. He “admitted he’d not fed the dogs in a week (believed by shelter staff to be a gross understatement),” Hartman reported. “He claimed he couldn’t take care of the dogs any longer and because of that, brought the dogs to a veterinarian to have them euthanized. He claimed the veterinarian refused, so he had no choice but to abandon them.”
Officers charged the man with two animal-cruelty counts. Police expect at least one of the dogs, the younger one, to recover fully.

This is outrageous! There’s a big difference between abandoning a dog (a pretty sucky thing to do) and tying one up to die of starvation (abhorrently unacceptable). The kid should be given a police commendation and the perp should be thrown in the slammer for as long as possible. As was pointed out in the Alex Wullaert/Desmond case, gross disregard for animal life could very possibly mature into gross disregard for human life; that’s how it statistically plays out.
Kudos to the child that alerted the police and to the officers for responding right away.
How sad. How could anyone do that to an animal??? He should be tied to a tree and not fed for over a week to see how it feels. If he couldn’t care for them, then either put them in the paper for free or bring them to the pound. I hope the dogs survive and find good homes.
With all due respect, NEVER advertise a dog for FREE. That’s when the scumbag dog fighters sweep up “free” dogs for bait, breeding, etc. As far as the shelter goes, they are unfortunately understaffed and crowded. The Friends of New Haven Animal Shelter is a group that helps around here.
But yes, there are certainly alternatives to being lazy, irresponsible and cruel by leaving the dogs to starve.
Great job to the child that grabbed the cops attention. It seems that Fumiatti and Stevens did an excellent job on following through with the case and grabbing the scumbag across town. It’s too bad the cruelty to animals is only a misdemeanor, and we all know that the judge is going to slap this evil troll with a BS fine and case over. And I 100% agreed with Robn Seth and Betty on your comments.
He will probably get accelerated rehabilitation. In my opinion Animal cruelty should not be eligible for AR. This williful disregard for life is disgusting especially since so many organizations would have helped. Seeing as how the guy admitted to not feeding the dog I don’t see why the NHI declined to place his name or picture in the article. He admitted to abandoning the dogs and not feeding them. This is not a case of some kid stealing candy from a corner store this is a grown man who decided to starve 2 dogs to death!
