ESUMS Cleared For Launch

The next New Haven public school can now be built in West Haven, thanks to a unanimous vote by the Board of Aldermen Monday night.

That’s the New Haven Board of Aldermen. Our city’s lawmakers voted after West Haven’s city council agreed to waive $500,000 in building permit fees for the construction of a new $85.5 million Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS).

The way is now cleared for the high-performing science-themed magnet school to have a permanent home, on the West Haven campus of the University of New Haven (UNH). The school has been housed in several different locations since its creation five years ago.

The 616-student school will have 400 slots for New Haven students, 123 for West Haven students.

Of an expected $1 million in building permit fees, UNH has agreed to pay for half, and West Haven will waive the other half.

The construction budget for the $85.5 million for the school now includes $16.1 million from the city. School officials told aldermen at an October hearing that the city’s bill will likely drop substantially.
