ESUMS Teacher Arrested For Alleged Sexual Misconduct

Detectives from the New Haven police Special Victims Unit (SVU) arrested an Engineering and Science University Magnet School teacher for alleged sexual misconduct.

Detectives arrested the teacher Wednesday evening for sexual assault in the second degree and risk of injury to a minor, several days after a student notified administrators about the teacher’s unprofessional conduct involving another student, according to a release from the city.

The teacher was put on administrative leave and removed from the classroom. New Haven police began an investigation. So far, the investigation has not shown any other students or teachers were involved in the misconduct.

Superintendent Garth Harries released a statement Wednesday afternoon after the arrest, saying that New Haven Public Schools would undergo its own investigation of the matter.

My primary and immediate concern remains, however, the well-being of students. The district has deployed resources to support the entire ESUMS community and continues to monitor the school closely,” he said in the statement.

The teacher is entitled to a presumption of innocence, a full and fair investigation, and due process. The NHPS investigation will follow that of the police department, gathering the relevant evidence and then determining the next steps,” he said.
