Cleaned Out, Yes—But Clean, Too

Days after armed robbers terrorized Five Guys Burgers and Fries, the Amity Road burger joint received another surprise visitor—a city health inspector who gave it high marks.
Five Guys received one of the highest grades during the city’s latest round of routine restaurant inspections.
Sanitarians at the Environmental Health Department inspect all of New Haven’s restaurants once a year. Restaurants with a score of less than 80 have about two weeks to make the recommended corrections. The department can also close a restaurant, regardless of score, if they see an immediate danger to public health.
The latest round of inspections called for a lot of cleaning and maybe some rodent poop removal at some spots, but for the most part, restaurants made the grade.
Five Guys scored second highest. The good news was doubly welcome, considering the bad news that hit the restaurant just days before that inspection: Two masked men, one of whom had a gun, held up an employee by the Dumpster in back of the restaurant. The robbers soon made off with cash from the safe inside and the workers’ cell phones. Police searched for suspects, but haven’t found them yet. It was the second theft at the burger joint in the past few months. Westville top cop Lt. Marty Tchakirides said Thursday that Detective Raghue Tennant is heading the ongoing investigation into the most recent heist. “It looks like they had a plan,” Tchakirides said about the thieves. “They were focused. They corralled the employees. They took their cell phones away from them They were in and out very quickly.”
