Fire Destroys House, Displaces 28

I've been in hundreds of houses in New Haven, and to me, it's incomprehensible that this three-family home could sustain 28 people under its roof. Where is LCI and their inspectors?

If you read the article carefully, the 28 were in two multi-family houses, not 1. The house that will have to come down and an adjacent building with damage.

28 people in 6 apartments is less than 5 per apartment. I know the house that was destroyed and they are 3 bedroom apartments. So if there was a couple in the master BR and 3 kids using the other 2 bedrooms it would not be overcrowding,

I also believe too many lived in that house. I would pass by everyday and would see the children playing outside in everybodys yard unsupervised. A full house and allmost everyone was home?That private entrance should also have a fence for trespassers. I guess the home owners are not interested in keep their safety. Anyone including the unattended kids could have set that fire.

To every one judging how many people live there..reality check the cost of housing is NOT cheap. It was NOT a boarding house or anything like that so that would imply that the vast majority of people in the house were related. If this is how they could afford to keep their family together, feed them cloth them and educate them then so be it. Only self righteous people would condemn others for doing what it take to make ends meet and to keep their families together. In MANY cultures your grandparents and parents live with you until they pass. Children dont leave when they get married or start families becseu child care is absurd etc...That is also how and why many foreigners are able to start theri own business becseu their parents share rooms with their children etc until the families finances are such that no one has to worry...a lesson many of us could learn from.

To the one chritiszing that there are always kids playing and adults hanging around..sounds like its a healthy happy household

By the way it's a multi-family house with just three floors with 28 people living in there. Not an apartment building with 6 floors. If thats not overcrowding what is?

How many posts will it take to get to to understand the 28 people were living in TWO houses, not the one destroyed by the fire?

With realmom21! Judging folks for living efficiently is ridiculous. I can't imagine what a fire must feel like to a family.

@new havener, @standup: Read the article again, particularly the sentence that says, "All 28 tenants of the two buildings got out safely."

Now do the math.
