www.newhavenfirefighter.org Firefighters spent an hour Tuesday extinguishing a brush fire by the railroad tracks near the Lowe’s store off I-91 Exit 8.

The call came in at 11:44 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Ralph Black. Firefighters responded from Engines 17, 10 and 8, Squad 1, and Truck 3.

The fire broke out among cattails near the tracks. The department notified the state police and Amtrak about the fire, but neither car traffic nor trains were delayed, Black said.

After putting out the fire, the crew spent another hour “hitting hot spots,” Black said. The fire was not deemed suspicious. It’s unclear what caused the fire, Black said. “It could be a number of things—sparks, people discarding a cigarette. All it needs when it’s dry like this is very little to start something like that.”

Ha, I got caught in the traffic that “wasn’t delayed” on the way home for lunch.  Was wondering what that was all about.
