Boo! (Safely)

A skeleton, an orphan and Spiderman entered a scary hall Thursday night — and emerged unscathed.

They entered a haunted hall known on other nights at the Goffe Street Armory.

They came to celebrate Halloween — safe and sound.

That was the point of a free party, which was organized by the city’s parks and rec department. The party continues for a second evening Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 at the armory at 290 Goffe..

Over 100 people attended the family-friendly party, which featured a DJ, booths with prizes, a haunted house, and crafts.

Attendees called the party a safer alternative to going door-to-door on Halloween (which falls on Saturday this year). One parent said she enjoyed the diversity of the people who attended the party — with families from different neighborhoods in New Haven and surrounding towns, and children from different schools

The party featured pumpkin decorating, dancing, a costume contest, and a bounce house. Organizers ask attendees to bring perishable food items to donate to the hungry.

Martin Torresquintero, the parks department’s outdoor adventure coordinator, said he enjoys watching kids have a good and healthful way to entertain themselves. He noted that organizers sought a location accessible to people who don’t own cars.

It’s a great event for everyone around in the community to come and participate in,” said another event organizer, Rex Cone. I like that it’s for all ages. The teenagers can go into the haunted hallway and have a good time as well as the younger kids, who can go paint pumpkins and have their faces painted.”

Jeanette Reynold, left brought the whole family.

This is the second year we’ve done this event, and it seems to be growing each year. And people are starting to look forward to it,” Cone said.

Park Ranger Dan Barvir doubled as an evil scientist in the Haunted Hallway.
