HANH Approves LEAP Summer Housing

School might be out for the summer, but LEAP won’t be for multiple senior counselors.

On Tuesday, the New Haven Housing Authority Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution to house six to eight senior LEAP counselors at the Farnam Courts housing development during the summer months.

Senior counselors are students at the college level, who often do not have housing guaranteed over the summer. The resolution will allow the counselors to help run LEAP’s six-week long summer program for New Haven youth.

The summer program runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Senior counselors, with the additional help of junior counselors, will escort children in the Farnam Courts locality to and from LEAP camp sites.

HANH Executive Director Karen DuBois-Watson noted that HANH and LEAP have had a strong partnership for many years. This is the sixth year that HANH will allow LEAP counselors to reside at Farnam Courts over the summer. LEAP’s main administrative building on Jefferson Street is also owned by HANH. It is rented out to LEAP for $1 on a long-term lease in exchange for the programs they make available for local children, DuBois-Watson said.
