The unbridled arrogance of claiming a primary win now ?!? this alone should convince most New Haveners to vote for a candidate OTHER than Harp.

Haters Unite --

A VERY impressive event, filed with real voters waiting for the polls to open. But I did not see too many East Rock Elicker attorneys and Yalies. Not to worry, now its your time to take shots at Sen. Harp.

Nick Defiesta, the editor of this story and the header, Harp "Claims" Primary; Looks To November; is deceptive on it's face.

Harp is quoted twice in this article. Once saying...she asked for volunteers to give their "blood, sweat and tears".

Second, saying... "Of course we've got to win in September first, but we're claiming it,"

This statement, in no manner of interpretation can be construed to mean:

Harp "Claims" Primary victory; Looks To election in November.

Intentional or not, the writer and the header leads the reader to believe that Harp is taking the primary for granted, expects victory and directs her volunteers to look towards November.
This is not so by any stretch of the imagination. What can realistically be contemplated is that Elicker, the only white candidate left in the race, has the inside track on winning the primary because his voters are not likely to split off for another candidate.

Just ask Clifton Graves, in 2011 two black candidates split the black citywide primary vote, which handed DeStefano a victory in 26 of the 30 wards including the lightly voting Hispanic wards,3,4,5, 13, 14, 15, 16; even the black wards 19,20,21,22,23,24,28 and 30.

Harp cannot afford to take the primary lightly, in fact, she had better not.

Great, so now people are gonna accuse Harp of being presumptuous and cocky. That's not fair. She's just being optimistic!

Not only does Justin have the highest percentage of local donors (Harp and Fernandez have the inverse proportion) he also is receiving capped donations ( unlike Harp and Fernandez) (recieving from people who don't believe that elections should be bought by moneyed interests).

There is a subtle difference when a woman of faith "claims" something that is not easily explained. Senator Harp was raised as a Baptist and her "claim" was an expression of faith that her campaign would win and clearly not an expression of arrogance. There is nothing in her background to even hint of arrogance or cockiness. Her parents raised a humble, intelligent, and socially conscious daughter who turned out to be one of our most effective public servants in the tradition of Ella Grasso, Rosa DeLauro, Jan Parker, Emma Ruff, Constance Baker Motley, and others.

I am not deiced jet about my candidate, But I saw this interview and sound actually very realistic where, Tony Harp Spoke about Immigrants abuse, driver licenses for immigrants and the Dream Act.

Let's see how many other Mayoral candidates can address these important issues (openly) that affect to the Latino community.Safety, job creations, Health and food awareness are at the top of my list too.

Great News! Thank you Toni for informing us that the primary victory is yours. This will save the people of New Haven an immense amount of time and effort that would have been required to review the qualifications of the candidates, make an informed decision, and go out and vote.

The next important step will be to convince the other candidates and the voters that it is evil for anyone to consider running as an independent in November. If there is more than one candidate in November, then residents registered independent, Green Party, Libertarian, and (gasp) Republican would have a voice in our government. This type of anarchy cannot be allowed.

My only "shot" at Harp is that I fear if she's elected, it will be business as usual in the city. we have a chance for real change for the 1st time in 20 years and I dont think she represents that.
As you know, i am a Carolina supporter "to the bone". And i've seen your posts about him. To me, he represents the true chance at change in New Haven. Frankly, I dont see that in Harp and am puzzled why she's even running- she doesnt appear to be up for it.

I was born Black at an early age and have lived as such for nearly 60 years I was not familiar with Threefifths' use of the term "Black Boule." I had to Google it. Black Boule is synonymous with the terms "house negro," "Uncle Tom," "Oreo," "white man's negro," and other terms denoting a traitor or a "sell-out" to the Black community. Boule supposedly represents the educated, refined, sophisticated, elite, dignified, articulate, successful middle and upper class African American community. The use of the term implies that these Blacks are out of touch with other Blacks, that they are not "authentically" Black at all, that they have not had a "classic" or typical African American experience living in poverty, that they don't care about the Black masses, that they are always "talking down" to Blacks in a very condescending and demeaning manner, blaming the "victims" for their problems. Black people who use this phrase think they are black militants, partakers of the "true" Black experience, "Blacker-than-thou" in thought and attitude. They gather in their militant cliques, sometimes calling them "All-African" peoples congresses, and criticize Black leaders with usually no effective and viable programs of their own. The Boule-haters despise President Barack Obama, Bill Cosby, and anyone else in the Black community who call on Black people to assume responsibility for their own achievement and advancement.
This kind of talk drives a class-wedge in the Black community that is totally unfortunate and unnecessary.
Mr. Threefifths has the desperate audacity to accuse Toni Harp of being a member of the Black Boule. Toni Harp once called the African peoples congress largely imaginary. The gruop didn't like that, but it was so true!
Toni Harp is a well-established and well-respected political leader who is Black. She has worked over the years to help ALL of her constituency. Question Harp's policies and ideas in this campaign,do not challenge the her "blackness."

I like a lot of what you say and would answer with that we will not find one person that totally agrees with our personal politics, but Senator Harp is clearly in the same category of women as the ones you and I both noted. Your examples are not around for us to scrutinize with the explosion of information sources that are available today. If we judge the senator by the whole of what she has done, i believe that we can be proud of her legislative accomplishments and her personal example.

Dear Sir Threefifths, It is logically implied by your statements that you were referring to Toni Harp and not Justin Elicker or anyone else in this campaign. If not so, why introduce the term at all in your statement? You said in reference to Mr. Carolina while comparing him to TONI HARP: "Plus he is not a member of the Black Boule." Without stating her name, you imply by your statement that Toni Harp IS a member of the Black Boule and all of the negative implications and connotations attached to the term. That, sir , is crystal clear for all to see! Plus Mr. Carolina himself,regularly during this campaign, has charged Senator Harp of being a member of the Black Boule without ever publicly using this term. I don't need to read anything else but your statements to interpret what you meant to say. The headline would read: CAROLINA SUPPORTER ACCUSES HARP OF BEING A MEMBER OF THE BLACK BOULE.

So Mr.HHE show me What Mr.Thomas Alfred Paine is talking about.Do you see any where I said Harps name.

REALITY: nowadays "elected officials" rarely represent "all the segments of our community". Unfortunately they more likely represent primarily their campaign funders. And the longer they're in office, the more true this becomes. nadir1876 says "[Harp] turned out to be one of our most effective public servants in the tradition of… Rosa DeLauro…". If you search "Rosa DeLauro Exposed" you'll get an idea of what that "tradition" is all about, how closely linked that "tradition" is to campaign money and how insidious it becomes the longer one remains an elected official. Linking Toni Harp to nadir1876's list of "public servants" should serve as a dire warning to voters.

I was wondering what happened to XAVIER who seemed to have been absent for a while. Whether or not his stuff is tongue in cheek, he's definitely become the Howard Cosell of this mayoral race.

This is the type of arrogant and out-of-touch statement I expect from a candidate who has few ethical quandaries and morals when it comes to running a campaign.

Thanks to modern journalism breaking down the lack of actual support she has from New Haven, though, I think this election may turn out differently than those of the past, when unprincipled smooth-talkers stole local elections.

Harp has never articulated a clear platform, has she? Where is it? She has two "nice ideas" on her website--"we need jobs" and "we need education" but absolutely not one single idea in implementing a plan to accomplish either.

Her website instead is a shrine devoted to how much everyone likes her and how amazing she is.

Is the same copywriter that One-City Henry employs doing double-duty?

I'm glad that a candidate who doesn't count votes before they are cast, a candidate of humility, intellect, and integrity, exists in this race.

Robn -- You now claim to be able to look into the hearts of donors and tell whether they "believe that elections should be bought by moneyed interests." You fail to note that big time Trial Lawyer Michael Stratton donated over $1300 to Elicker thru his kids and family. So much for the $370 DF contribution limit. Including the other attorney money he is bundling (50 plus attorneys are listed as Elicker donors), who do you really think is trying to "buy" this election? And who do you think Elicker will owe in the unlikely event he is successful? A clearly local partisan, with a clearly local interest to promote. Attorneys and Yalies making up the bulk of Elicker contributors does not exactly sound like the voice of New Haven.

3/5th's -- Your attempt to inject intra-race competition and classism into this contest is so passe. It won't help your candidate. Move on to another tactic.

No one is more Yalie than Mike Morand. And, ironically, he's on the side of Toni Harp and Unite Here. Hmmmmmm... Curious...

Why is Harp simultaneously claiming victory in a future primary and also announcing that her campaign is working harder than ever? If its already won then what is left to do? Is it because maybe she's discovered that she's not as popular in New Haven as she thought <gasp>!

I think the reporter read too much into that one line. Claiming victory now is incongruent with her actions (i.e. announcing a full-scale attack on innocent voters)! I feel for the undecided voters in New Haven. August is going to reveal a barrage of Harp propaganda.

In another thread, I mentioned a 'public safety' flyer , which I received from Senator Harp's State Office on Friday, regarding 'Being Prepared for the next Big STORM'

Since her big 'opening gala' was scheduled for the very next Saturday, this 'public safety' message can only be construed as a cheap political ploy.

I think her candidate's coffers should reimburse her senatorial 'coffers' for a percentage of the mailing cost.

I am flattered, but the book has been written already by One City Henry. It is One City Henry's destiny to be mayor and one day sit in congress. One City Henry's tough upbringing, dealing with all the racism, and people trying to jam him in to a square hole when as one can plainly see he is a round peg.

The burden of proof lies with someone who is making a claim, and is not upon anyone else to disprove. The inability, or disinclination, to disprove a claim does not render that claim valid, nor give it any credence whatsoever. However it is important to note that we can never be certain of anything, and so we must assign value to any claim based on the available evidence, and to dismiss something on the basis that it hasn't been proven beyond all doubt.Again prove what I said.

Mr. "Threefifths" needs to do some math. Look at candidate Harp's experience, for example. "Kermit the Fraud" is not prepared to be a principal, let alone mayor. His statements just don't add up.
