Heat Wave Opens Cooling Centers

Due to extreme temperatures continuing throughout the region for the coming days, the City of New Haven will be activating cooling centers” for the public to provide relief from the heat.

Cooling centers will remain open after Wednesday if high temperatures and humidity continue. Check www.cityofnewhaven.com for updates.

Anyone attending a cooling location should bring lunch or snacks, since no food will be served at these sites. Seniors are reminded that senior centers require 24-hour notice for senior meals.

Seniors may seek refuge from the heat at the following locations, open until 4 p.m.:

• Atwater Senior Center at 26 Atwater St., New Haven
• Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center at 255 Goffe St., New Haven
(People with wheelchairs will need assistance to help travel up ramp)
• East Shore Senior Center at 411 Townsend Ave., New Haven

The general public may cool off at these locations at specific hours:

• New Haven Free Public Library Main Building is located at 133 Elm St.; Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. — 8 p.m., Friday & Saturday 10 a.m. — 5 p.m.
• Fair Haven Branch Library is located at 182 Grand Ave.; Monday & Tuesday 10 a.m. — 6 p.m., Thursday 12p.m. — 8 p.m.
• Mitchell Branch Library is located at 37 Harrison St.; Open Monday 12 p.m. — 8 p.m., Wednesday & Thursday 10 a.m. — 6 p.m.
• Stetson Branch Library is located at 200 Dixwell Ave. in the Dixwell Plaza; Monday & Tuesday 10 a.m. — 6 p.m., Wednesday 12 p.m. — 8 p.m.
• Courtland Seymour Wilson Branch Library is located at 303 Washington Ave.; Tuesday 12 p.m. — 8 p.m., Wednesday & Thursday 10 a.m. — 6 p.m.

The following public pools are open with extended summer hours: Monday — Friday from 5 p.m.-8 pm; Saturday 11 a.m. — 3 p.m.

• Hill Regional Career High School, 140 Legion Ave.
• John Martinez School, 100 James St., Fridays
• James Hillhouse, 480 Sherman Pkwy, Fridays
• Wilbur Cross High School, 181 Mitchell Dr., Fridays

The following are city parks with splash pads that can be used for cooling off:

• South Genesee Park, located on South Genesee St.
• Cedar Hill Playground, located at View and Rock Streets
• Edgewood Park located, located on the corner of Chapel Street & Ella T. Grasso Boulevard
• Kensington Street Park, located between Edgewood Avenue & Chapel Street
• Jocelyn Square Park, located on the corner of Humphrey & East Streets
• Ann Street Park, located between Kossuth & West Streets
• Trowbridge Square Park, located at Cedar & Portsea Streets
• Galvin Park, located at Greenwich Avenue & First Street
• Lighthouse Point Park, located at 2 Lighthouse Rd.
• Scantlebury Park, located at Ashmum Street & Bristol Street
• Edgewood Park, located at Ella T. Grasso Blvd & Stanley Street
• Dover Beach, located on Front Street
