School officials are looking into why a new alarm system didn’t function overnight when vandals broke into Hillhouse High School.

Cleaning staff arrived at the school Monday morning to find broken glass and other signs of a break-in.

Assistant Police Chief Archie Generoso said police got the call at 7:22 a.m. Officers responded to the scene to discover smashed windows around the front offices and damage in classrooms.

The department’s robbery and burglary unit is looking into the matter, he said. Right now we’re trying to determine exactly the monetary value of the damage done and what if anything was taken.”

School system security chief Thaddeus Reddish said the intruders vandalized multiple classrooms.” He did not have a specific number.

They trashed classrooms. They broke glass in classroom doors,” Reddish said. He said school security staff is assisting in the investigation.

Hillhouse moved its summer camp programs to other parts of the campus while cops processed the scene Monday.

The school system recently instituted a new security system to handle keycard access, surveillance videos, and alarms, according to Chief Operation Officer Will Clark. He said his staff is working to get to the bottom” of why alarms did not go off at Hillhouse overnight.

Clark said the alarms did function properly last week during a break-in at Wexler Grant School, which also involved vandalism.
