Hit-And-Run Rookie A Cop No More

Jessica Cole Photo Rookie cop Marquis Morrison was on the streets without a license the night of his hit-and-run collision with a 14-year-old girl that left her in a wheelchair and him in criminal court.

Now, he’s without a uniform, too.

Scheduled to attend a termination hearing last night before the Board of Police Commissioners, Morrison, 24, chose instead to submit his resignation from the police force.

Commissioner Richard Epstein, the chairman of the board, announced the decision and canceled the hearing before it began. According to city spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga, Morrison had been on unpaid medical leave and then administrative duty prior to his resignation.

Earlier this summer, Morrison also had to face criminal charges for the crash, which occurred after he rode his motorcycle through a red light and into 14-year-old Niije Kelly on April 30.

...what the bigger picture doesn’t show us is that he should have never been hired in the first place. background checks are conducted for a reason and when recommendations are made to not hire an individual then perhaps they should be taken seriously. the parents of the girl who was injured should really conduct/demand all records regarding morrison’s hiring. or demand a meeting with the individual’s responsible for his hiring and demand the officer’s who conducted the background check be present as well. but then again,..the great command staff over at city hall would be too affraid to allow such a meeting.
the responsibility of this incident falls on the city,..just another example of why we need to change the hiring policies at the NHPD

Are there any benefits whatsoever that Morrison qualifies for?  No word on the resignation from from Cavaliere?

Why did Bandy keep his job while Morrison was forced to resign?

It’s kind of funny they let him resign, but I understand why he pushed for it. As long as he resigns and they accept it, then on future applications he does not need to specify a firing and ULTIMATELY he resigned for “personal” reasons!

He’s one smart cookie…

Morrison really should be in prison, but at the very least should have been immediately fired from the department.

I think many people would like to see this story followed through to its conclusion.  What is happening with the criminal case?  The linked story says he was due back in court on June 29th—any further news?

Also, DKR raises a good point.  If there was a background check which brought a recommendation not to hire Mr. Morrison, why was that recommendation ignored?  Would the results of such a check be available under the FOIA?  Many years ago, I worked with a number of people who were seeking jobs as police officers.  It has always been my understanding that police jobs are highly competitive and that departments can hire the cream of the crop, so to speak.
