The police department is accepting donations to the 9 year-old girl who was hospitalized after years of alleged brutal abuse at the hand of her stepfather.

Read about the girl’s case here.

The case prompted readers to inquire about how to make donations on her behalf. Police spokesman Officer David Hartman said Thursday the department is accepting donations at the front desk at headquarters at 1 Union Ave.; it will forward the donations to the state Department of Children and Families.

Here are the rules, according to Hartman:

“1. We will not accept monetary donations.
“2. If there are many similar items collected, we will make some available to other children in need.
“3. The donated items should be appropriate for a child.
“4. We will only accept new items.
“5. Donations of food aren’t needed and will not be accepted.”
