How To Get Published

When Shafiq Abdussabur started his own journey toward being a published book author, he said, I felt like someone had taken me to another planet, and I needed some water, and their word for water was something I didn’t understand.”

On WNHH radio’s Urban Talk Radio,” Abdussabur spoke with Grael Norton, Director of Marketing at Wheatmark Publishing, about how to get published, the frustrations and rewards involved, and the way the publishing world has changed in the past few years — from traditional vs. independent publishers to and the world of literary agents.

There’s been an explosion of independent publishers and self-publishing,” Norton said. Definitely do your own research. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few publishers, you can just reach out to them.”

In addition to small publishers, giants such as Amazon have entered the publishing business. The problem with publishing with Amazon is that Amazon is the enemy of, basically, every other publisher and bookseller in the world,” Norton said.

There are a lot of options out there now,” he added. At least in nonfiction, what a lot of publishers are looking for is a book with a specific audience that solves a problem.”
