Taggers, Skamatix Paint The Village Ideat

As an international arts festival get underway two blocks away, local “Ideats” were marching to their own drum kit.
It was the launch Saturday afternoon of the ninth annual “Ideat Village” festival, formed as a local independent response to the official Arts & Ideas fest that takes place in downtown New Haven every summer.
The entirely free “Ideat” festival features all local artists, including the graffiti artists invited to paint Pitkin Plaza on Orange Street Saturday.
Six bands with a rotating cast of spectators nestled into the archway of the Giaimo Federal Building in Millennium Plaza to jam all Saturday afternoon.
The Harris Brothers Balkan Band took to the stage with a rollicking thump that springs from a Balkan Roma style of Gypsy music, but would not sound out-of-place at the Village Vanguard either.
Next, The Skamatix took the stage with a set of electric jazz and, no surprises here, ska that got numerous members of the audience dancing. (Click on the play arrow for a sample.)
Around the corner in Pitkin Plaza, spoken-word artists played “Grab The Mic”, taking turn reading and reciting their poetry. Graffiti artists had an “Aerosol Event” on the walls behind them, specially covered in vinyl for the event. The graffiti will run for the remained of the IDEAT Village festival.
The festival continues 9 p.m. on Tuesday with “American Ideat”, competitive karaoke at Olde School Saloon and Bistro, and returns to Pitkin Plaza on June 24, 25, and 26.

This festival is one of the greatest things that the city has to offer. One wonders why “other” festivals pay $170,000 for imported European artists when we have so much homegrown talent.

Dog Hunch, a tribute to electric Miles Davis, also appeared. Just sayin’...

Notice the one car next to the Liberman Sculpture.
The only vehicle in the plaza, and it just ruined the view!
That’s where we had wanted to put the bands…...

Ideats Village is my favorite event of the year. Thank you to all the organizers, and thank you to the New Haven Independent for covering the event. This is really a great time to live in New Haven. So much positive energy, and great talent. I feel blessed to be a part of a such a wonderful community.

The full music roster for this weekend’s Ideat Village was:
* Dog Hunch
* The Harris Brothers Balkan Brass Band
* The Skamatix
* The New Haven Improvisers Collective
* Chris Cretella (the organizer) debuting a new piece
I was over in Millenium Plaza so I didn’t have the chance to spend a lot of time up at Pitkin, but it seemed like they had a great scene going with a lot of very talented people doing their thing.
Kudos to Cretella and to Ideat Village for showcasing instrumental music in New Haven. It was a full day of really great music and reminded me why I love living here!

Ideat Village- An excellent idea that will grow as more New Haveners learn about the event and its wonderful display of local talent. I especially enjoyed The Skamatix and visiting with “street artists” at Pitkin Plaza. Kudos to organizers and participants - your hard work is appreciated.
