On Jan, 21, while Barack Obama celebrates being sworn in to his second term in office, New Haveners will be cutting a rug at an inaugural ball of their own.
Democratic Party Town Chair Jackie James is helping to organize a presidential inaugural ball at the Omni Hotel on Monday, Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Day.
The event is a benefit for New Haven Works, the new local “jobs pipeline” organization.
The evening will include dinner and dancing, with three tiers of tickets. “Patrons” ($125) will arrive at 5:45 p.m. to partake of hors d’oeuvres and an open bar on the top floor of the Omni, followed by dinner and dancing in the Grand Ballroom. “Supporters” ($60) will arrive at 6:30 p.m. for dinner, dessert, and dancing in the Grand Ballroom, where there will be a cash bar. “Guests” ($25) can arrive at 8 p.m. for desserts and dancing and cash bar access.
You can RSVP by calling (203) 776-2273.

There is a charge to get in because we like to pay musicians and the wait staff and chefs and for the food and lighting and sound people and for the employees of the Independent etc. etc. Otherwise they would be poor too.

This sounds like an effort to break the cycle of poverty. According to the article, monies raised benefit a new initiative to help the unemployed get training and jobs. The community should turn out, so New Haven Works can help folks find work so they can someday ‘pay it forward.’
I’m just sayin.
