Police have found the 1-year-old girl reported kidnapped earlier Wednesday.
The police earlier Wednesday issued an “amber alert” for a 46-year-old man driving a teal Dodge Intrepid who allegedly kidnapped the New Haven girl.
Police said the girl’s biological father, who does not have legal custody, kidnapped her earlier Wednesday. He subsequently telephoned the baby’s mother and threatened to kill himself and his child, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman.
Sgt. Tony Reyes reached the man several times by phone and convinced him to meet police with the child, according to top west side cop Lt. Marty Tchakirides. The man offered to meet them in the parking lot of West River Wine & Spirits near the intersection of Orange Avenue and Ella Grasso Boulevard around 1:30. He reportedly said the child was “safe” and that he would surrender without incident.
Police swarmed to the site. The man didn’t show at first.
He is thought to be in possession of a firearm and is bipolar.
However by 2 p.m. the police had him in custody. He was arrested and taken “without incident” to police headquarters at 1 Union Ave., according to Tchakirdies. “Child and father are safe.”
The baby girl turned 1 this past Saturday.
The man had a friend drive him to the scene in a red SUV. They arrived late because the driver had been confused about how to get to the meeting spot, according to Tchakirides.
