Mayor Toni Harp plans to consult with King-Robinson Magnet School students on how to spend $1,000 they raised and donated to the city.

Harp was a guest of honor at the Newhallville school Monday morning as she received the check, slated to financially boost her efforts to unite the city of New Haven.” The money came from the Season of Hope” donation campaign, which students held throughout the month of December, to finance King-Robinson events and to route money to a student-designated local organization.

Nyla Conaway, the student council president, said a school survey pinpointed the Connecticut Food Bank as the likely preferred recipient.

It’s important to make a meaningful contribution to your community,” Harp addressed staff and students Monday. The job of doing makes us happier than actually getting there. Today it’s New Haven, but in the future, it might be a different community.”

Superintendent Garth Harries praised students for acting on the power of a sense of engagement” with the city. The learning that happens in and around the community” is a crucial part of primary education, he said.

Students at the International Baccalaureate school took the mic Monday morning to share other projects they had developed to give back to their communities. Third-grader Carlos Kirkland, moved to help the city’s homeless, e‑mailed the CEO of Unilever and managed to get 150 needed items donated and delivered to women’s shelter Life Haven in mid-December.

Two students in the school’s language immersion program spoke about their projects in both English and French, prompting Harp to joke: I took French, too, and I just recognized je m’appelle.’”
