Limon’s Parade Plea: Keep Booze At Home

Police Chief Frank Limon is asking attendees at Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade to come without the alcohol.
Police plan to conduct DUI checks and to hand out citations of up to $99 for violations of laws banning “public drinking from open containers, disorderly behavior and sale of alcoholic beverages other than in licensed establishments,” Limon said in a release issued Friday.
“The New Haven Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is a rich, family-oriented, cultural tradition. Come and enjoy the parade, leave your coolers and alcoholic beverages at home and avoid having a citation spoil your St. Patrick’s Day celebration.”
The parade starts at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sherman Avenue and Chapel Street. It proceeds down Chapel to Church Street and ends at Orange and Grove. Organizers expect 3,700 marchers in the parade itself and another 300,000 people to watch.

Write as many citations as you can. We need the $$. 16 cops laid off, Fire Engine 8, Library staff laid-off, library hours cut.
Stumbling down Chapel Street with a Bud Light should be seen as a form of voluntary taxation…

Family oriented, really? If I had a family I’d go nowhere near that parade. I could hear it now: “Daddy, why is that guy peeing on the sidewalk?”

Mr Limon,
Lets make a deal… the cops don’t strike and show up for work on Parade day and we as citizens will curb our public drinking. Seems fair to me.
BTW O’Toole… get with the program. I understand that Haters like you will hate, but you should also be aware that there are plenty of family friendly areas along the parade route. In fact, if you would like I would be happy to set aside some VIP tickets to the grandstand area on Church street for you and your family. That way you can see what the parade is really all about instead of making sweeping generalizations about the actions of a few. With 300,000 people there are bound to be a few examples of poor behavior but by no means is that what the parade is all about.

street life is what makes a city for me !
I miss the streets filled with food and people during the Italian festival that moved to a parking lot, and all times that Chapel Street had performers as part of the pIlot pen ... I am grateful and happy that. Patrick’s Day brings out crowds!

Again people, put your booze in a plastic cup and don’t get fall down drunk & pee in the streets and you will be fine! My friends and I said and DID this last year and we were never confronted by or bother by the police. If you can’t attend a public event in the middle of the day and drink responsibly without getting plastered and acting a fool than you should spare the rest of us your antics and stay home! As for everyone else who can behave like mature adults, Happy St. Patrick’s Day, enjoy the parade and the lovely weather :-)

Blue Flu: My 2yo daughter would love to see this parade, but I hesitate to bring her because the crowds are so dense and dangerous for small children. What would you say is the best location? Personally, I enjoy the revelry, but last year her stroller was nearly crushed by the crowds on Chapel near the Green.

@ bruce try to get down there early and go to the green near I think it’s city hall…its usually a good spotqith the reviewing stand nearby I’ve enjoyed that spot for years…

Bruce,
I would say the best spot for you and your family would be on Church St. anywhere from City Hall up to Grove St. Tons of families with small children watch the parade from this area. I hope you and your family come out and enjoy the wonderful New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade!!!

Bruce,
I agree with Paddy… have fun! Indeed the crowd is much more “tame” on Church between chapel and Grove… you may want to stop near the viewing stand in front of city hall… there is a family friendly area there with bleachers.

Hey chief you start giving out citations
I certainly am not giving any citations out let them have fun the city allowed drinking for decades and now no. I am gonna sit back and enjoy the parade as longs as no one gets out of control

HEY DAVE C, i think a much better idea would be for all the police to show up late, stand around, get paid and continue to take heat from the public and bloggers about how lazy and useless they are. Hell is this is the majority feeling, might as well let them be right…GOOD LUCK NH your on your own hahahaha

you want us to take action? on your say so? why? so you can throw us under the bus when the “residents” complain like you did Melendez? no thanks, do it yourself!

Limon needs to focus on the violent crime in this city, period. Threatening tickets for open containers is an absolute joke for the St Patty’s parade especially when parts of this town are already like the wild west(cops don’t often issue tickets for anything).

... This parade was NEVER for kids.
This parade brings scores of thousands of people back into new haven because of the bacchanal that it is. people who don’t come into town for any other reason during the year (now that the summer concerts were axed) and each one i bet doesn’t spend less then $30 in new haven. minimal.
That’s a lot of money for a random sunday during what’s usually a crappy weather day.
Is it new haven’s finest cultural offering? absolutely not. Do the parade goers often get drunk and sloppy? Yes they do.
but, is new orleans going to ban drinking on mardi gras anytime soon?
