Marty Looney has a message for people in New Haven, especially seniors: The government $300 for you, and you’re not taking it.

Looney, a New Haven state senator and majority leader of the State Senate, is concerned about the recent federal mailing of “stimulus” checks to taxpayers. He plans to visit the Bella Vista elderly complex in New Haven, as well as Hamden’s Davenport senior center, in coming weeks to let people know they have the money, and can take it.

Statewide, 69,725 people are not required to file income tax returns — but are still eligible to claim $300 stimulus checks ($600 for couples). The IRS has set up a “rebate hotline” to help people prepare the paperwork to get the checks: > 1-866-234-2942.

New Haven ranks 41st among counties natonwide in unclaimed stimulus checks. (Chart here.)
