Independent staff reporter Thomas MacMillan’s coverage of East Haven police harassment of Hispanics won him the 2010 National Award for Excellence in American Journalism on Latino issues.
The award, announced Friday by the AL DIA Foundation. Read a release about it here.
MacMillan won first place in the digital media division, edging out CNN. The award carries with it a $10,000 prize. MacMillan will also receive a medal at a ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington this fall.
Judges called MacMillan’s ongoing coverage of alleged racial profiling right across the New Haven-East Haven border “a fine example of traditional shoe leather reporting, consistent news coverage and the use of video, digital photos and court documents to provide context for the overall story. A strong marriage of multimedia and journalism.”
His stories appeared in the New Haven Independent in English and in La Voz Hispana in Spanish.

Congratulations Thomas:
I am delighted to see you get your just desserts. It is truly rewarding to know that there are journalistic panels that still value good old-fashioned journalism. Their comment:
“a fine example of traditional shoe leather reporting, consistent news coverage and the use of video, digital photos and court documents to provide context for the overall story. A strong marriage of multimedia and journalism” is greatly appreciated by this “small media” person.
We at OneWorld Progressive Institute, Inc also congratulate Paul Bass and the NHI for making it possible for your work to be seen and appreciated. Too often these days the work of authentic journalists can only be seen in the glare of flash and dash media and is often devoid of the most meaningful content. Sadly, these good works may also be buried on page 10. We all see what has been happening to the written word in traditional journalism. Of course, we the readers also have an important role to play in reading and commenting on good journalism. Flash & dash media should not replace the written words that provide the real substance about events.
Please accept our heartiest congratulations for a honor well deserved.

This is huge, Thomas. Monster. Congratulations for a fine job on this subject and issues at City Hall too. I confess, I was skeptical when this story first broke. But your consistent reporting won me over which is what happens when reporters provide quality coverage of a subject and by doing so, educate, inform and expand our knowledge and understanding. Excellent work.

This award demonstrates what I already knew as a loyal reader of the N.H. Independent: the New Haven Independent is a unique and vital resource for our community. It is the ONLY newspaper in the region that does original in-depth reporting on local events and the ordinary and extraordinary people who live here. It is a cornerstone of our democracy.

Hey, maybe with the 10 grand Thomas can buy himself a haircut! JK, you’re perfect just the way you are. Way to go! Hopefully East Haven won’t bring against you the full fury of leopard print stretch pants and hairspray choking doom!
