A 22-year-old man from Waterbury died Sunday morning after he was shot inside the Cheetah Club at 159 East St.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Dave Hartman:
At 1:23 a.m. Sunday, “Officer Brian McDermott and Sergeant Jason Weted were patrolling the parking lot adjacent to The Cheetah Club, 169 East St., when they heard a single gunshot. Patrons ran from the club into the parking lot as the officers ran inside. A large response by other officers followed.
“The club had been hosting a Hip-Hop party.
“Once inside, Officers found Torrance Dawkins, of Waterbury,” suffering from “a single fatal gunshot wound. The victim turned 22 years old on the 10th.”
“Officers detained several hundred patrons for the time it took to obtain their identities.”
Detectives “are in the beginning stages of this investigation, and although they’ve received some helpful information, a suspect has yet to be identified,” Hartman said.
Police have been collecting forensic evidence and reviewing the club’s surveillance footage.
