After a routine patrol turned up a man with a fatal gunshot wound, police quickly located a suspect and, with the help of the SWAT team, arrested him.
The 19-year-old victim, Michael Holland of Dixwell Avenue, has become New Haven’s 15th homicide victim of the year.
Here’s what happened according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
At 7:45 p.m. on Friday, police were on a routine patrol in the Hill neighborhood when they heard gunshots. Police responded to the area of 78 Third St., where they found Holland suffering a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead from his injury a short time later.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit responded and “promptly developed a suspect” and uncovered information about where he might be. Police cordoned off the house at 227 Howard Ave., around the corner from the site of the shooting. The SWAT team was called in and entered and searched the house, where police found the 18-year-old suspect. He was arrested and charged with murder.
Police determined that the shooting was the result of a dispute and was an isolated incident. The suspect is being held on a $1.5 million bond.

Note that the victim was shot where drug dealing on Third St.—originating from 299 Greenwich Ave.—continues to take place. (See SeeClickFix, New Haven, City Point neighborhood, “Drugs”.) This is despite repeated complaints by residents, and despite last month’s arrest of a 17-year-old dealer at 299 Greenwich—who had 2 guns. So is it the new police strategy to simply let these kids kill each other until there’s no one left to arrest???

God forbid you have a positive comment. Seeing as though the cops caught the suspect, you have to find something else to complain about. And how do you have this info about it originating from 299 greenwich? Everybody has information, but nobody wants to come forward.

I guess I just don’t get it.
The Police Department is to blame because SeeClickFix didn’t fix things ?
The old saying that the more things change, the more they remain the same is certainly applicable in this, the current application of “New World Order”.
Let’s blame the criminals for crime, not the Police Department.
Let’s credit the Police Department for solving this crime, with great expedience, rather than being the reason it occurred.
To do otherwise borders on the ridiculous.

My heart and prayers go out to the family and friends of michael holland. Every time I learn of another shooting of a young black man. It hurts my heart and forces me to re-live the day my own child Justus Suggs age 13@ the time was gunned down. July 29th 2010 marked 4 yrs he was taken from me & our family. Ever since I heard of the shooting friday. I have prayed the young man would recover from his injuries. And asked others to do the same. To michaels family and friends. I know its going to be a long hard road to travel down without your loved one. But let his love for you all and yours for him be your strenght to see you through this difficult time. For there is no greater love than the love of GOD and the love michael shared with you. GOD BLESS Tracey Suggs mother of Justus R. Suggs. of new haven
