Man Shot Dead

A man was shot dead Saturday evening in the rear of a house on Weybosset Street.

Police got a 911 call about the shooting at 7:21 p.m., according to Lt. Al Vazquez.

He said the man — whom police identified as Deveron McLaughlin, 32, from Munson Street — was shot once, in the head. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.

The shooting took place a block away from Middletown Avenue in the Bishop Woods/ Quinnipiac Meadows section of town.

That brings the number of homicides in 2013 to 19, two more than in 2012; the number of overall shootings had dropped for the second year in a year.

A six-family house sits on the property. The landlord told the Independent Saturday night that she has never had problems with tenants there. She said that there have been problems with tenants from the Sunset Ridge apartment complex, which backs onto the property. We are constantly closing” off the property to try to stop Sunset Ridge tenants from passing through en route to Middletown Avenue, she said.

She said she has not had problems with her tenants. It’s scary,” she said. We never had anything like this.”
