“Man Shot In Fair Haven”

I had to chuckle when I read this title. This is not news. This is a weekly occurence in Fair Haven. Anyone have any theories as to what is causing this upswing in crime in Fair Haven? Was there a recent increase in the number of parolees let out of prison or is this just the younger low lives trying to get street cred?

I think it is a city wide headline.

My thoughts is that “they” know we are lacking in protection and have grown a big set of _____! The patrols have publicly said they can not investigate drug dealing in the city. So guess what if they are not doing that the rest follows. The robberys and muggings car thiefs ect. And what is on record is not even half the stuff that is happening in New Haven. If you tell the police over and over about drug houses and they do nothing then who else can you call??? Well there is alway the state police and the feds.

We are a drug dealer friendly city!

My sense is that a lot of these are in fact drug transactions gone bad.  Check out the 64 year old man robbed at gunpoint at Poplar and Exchange.  Now no doubt over the last year this area has gone down somewhat (a couple of bad landlords and tenants)  No doubt why there are a few for sale signs but most of the properties are well maintained.

But here’s the point, at 5 pm at this intersection there would have been between 10 and 20 people walking on the street or sitting on their porches.  There is a convenience store on this corner so a half dozen kids would have been buying candy, etc.

Let me give my interpretation of the “victim’s” description of events—highly doubtful!!!

He got robbed in front of lots of witnesses—at gunpoint???  And the thieves got away clean???

We have an endless supply of “street robberies” in this neighborhood but it is very seldom that the working class residents of (at least the block I live on) have problems with muggings or burglaries and when these do happen, they tend to get resolved pretty quick (arrests, patrols, etc.).

But what we see all the time that does not get solved is drug sales and prostitution.  And why does it happen here?  Precisely because people from East Haven (not to hate on East Haven but they are the suburb closest to us so that’s where they come from) and elsewhere think of this as a safer place than parts of Newhallville or the Hill to buy their drugs.  I have seen lots of drug busts of buyers over the last 5 years and truthfully every single one of them has been a white person in a car.  I know my neighbors (and we are a pretty diverse community—whites, blacks, latinos) but I have never seen one of my neighbors arrested for buying drugs.

These folks are either getting swindled or they are too doped up to remember they have to pay for the drugs they just illegaly bought then they cry to the police when they get robbed.  This may seem insane but I have personally watched it happen on 3 separate occasions.  The stories folks come up with for the police are so absurd you almost have to laugh.

Stories like .. I got robbed at gunpoint in full daylight in front of a dozen witnesses.

Maybe we can issue City I.D. cards to the buyers.  Seriously, they would have proof that they were in the city specifically to buy drugs, check out a library book on the way home, and maybe even play nine holes at Muni.  And make it a “punch hole” card.  For every fifth transaction they get one free.  Worked for Subway!  What a great way to get new faces into the city.

Of course, I’m being ridiculous, and mingling two issues, but let’s face it: both issues are due to the self-aggrandizing, arrogant and ignorant leadership in City Hall that has no concern for the legitimate residents of New Haven (except to continually relieve them of their monies).

You are so right about these drug deals gone bad. Lots of these people are coming to New Haven to buy drugs and ennd up getting themselves robbed.
But I would not be so fast to dismiss the story of the 64 year old man just because he was robbed at 5pm. It was not too long ago Richard Beamon was murdered in broad daylight by a young savage. These low lives are becoming more brazen as time goes on

I understand where you are coming from. When I moved here in 2004 my block had its problems but the area was livable. But over the past 3 year drug dealers and drug addicts have slowly moved into the area to the point where drugs are openly being sold on the corner of Whalley and Winthrop. Part of the reason is the cops are overwhelmed. Even if the NHPD put together a huge narcotics task force tommrow they would still have their hands full identifying, investigating, arresting and charging these drug dealers. And once they have arrested them they will have to deal with people in New Haven like Barbara Fair and others who think going after drug dealers is a war on black people. While the police definately could be doing a better job I can’t blame them for being hesitant to enforce the law when they don’t know if they are going to be called a hero or a racist if they arrest a drug dealer.

I guess we really can’t count on the cops if they can’t prevent their own cars from being snatched.

I was born and raised in New Haven . . . but I’ve just about had it . . .between the taxes and the crime, I can’t take it any more.  Guilford, here I come.
