Christian Community Action, which helps homeless families and other low-income people, has snagged a big name for its annual big-show fundraiser: Wynton Marsalis. The agency sent in this write-up about the event:
Jazz great Wynton Marsalis is coming to New Haven this Tuesday, Oct. 22, along with his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and a 77-member choir, Chorale Le Chateau, under the direction of Damien Sneed, to perform his jazz/gospel masterwork, Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration!
The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Yale’s Woolsey Hall. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Christian Community Action, a local ecumenical social services agency, and its programs helping families that are homeless.
Tickets ($100; $75; $45; $30 and $20) can be purchased in person at the Shubert Theater box office, 247 College Street, by phone at (203) 562-5666 or 1-(888)-736-2663 or online (with an extra fee) at www.shubert.com. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door the night of the performance.
Marsalis composed the piece to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem in 2008.
