May Day Benefit

Connecticut native and global troubadour David Rovics sang at a fundraising concert Thursday night at Edge of the Woods to benefit this year’s (21st annual) May Day celebration on the New Haven Green. Introduced by Paula Panzarella, who’s been the co-organizer of the event for all but two of those years, Rovics sang a dozen of his own compositions, which ranged from hysterical (“I’m a Better Anarchist Than You”) to romantic to as timely as the day’s headlines, like this song for Rachel Corrie. The fourth anniversary of her killing by an Israeli soldier driving a U.S.-funded bulldozer as she tried to protect a Palestinian’s home in Gaza was Friday, the day after the concert, and articles appeared in various media taking note of it.
And click on this play arrow to watch a clip of Mat Callahan and Yvonne Moore singing, “Miss Tiffany,” about a fortuneteller Mat encountered years ago in San Francisco. Both Mat and Yvonne had individual singer careers. They are now “partners in life and love,” according to their publicity postcard. Mat wrote a whole slew of new songs to take advantage of the “third instrument” that emerged from the melding of their voices in close harmonies. Their website is her.
Rovics’ website is here. where he encourages fans to listen and to download any of his legions of songs. Alas, this newbie videographer didn’t realize she couldn’t shoot video vertically, so was unable to post her favorite song of his, “Operation Iraqi Liberation,” which was the name the Bush administration first gave to its invasion of Iraq. When they realized the acronym spelled OIL, they changed the moniker.
May Day always takes place on May 1, the international workers’ holiday and spring festival, so this year it’s on a Tuesday, from noon to 5 p.m. on the New Haven Green. There’ll be, as always, music, free vegetarian food, speechifying, and a Maypole dance.
