As she opened a regional campaign headquarters in East Haven, U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon declined to take a stance on a major local issue—the federal probe of racial profiling claims against that town’s police department.

“I’m really not familiar with the case,” said the Republican candidate in response to questions about the the U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing probe of the East Haven police force. McMahon, who’s seeking the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd, made the comment at the grand opening of her new headquarters Wednesday evening at 274 Hemingway Ave.

The feds have been investigating the department for over six months, after a request by a Fair Haven church. Members of a largely Latino church, St. Rose of Lima, asked the Department of Justice to look into allegations that East Haven cops have been targeting Latinos for verbal and physical harassment and even violence.

Those allegations first came to light in March 2009 after St. Rose’s Father James Manship was arrested by East Haven police while documenting alleged police harassment in a convenience store. Manship was later exonerated after it was found that police had lied on Manship’s arrest report.

In April, the Department of Justice released preliminary findings in its investigation, stating that the East Haven police department suffers from, among other things, inadequate oversight of officers and a lack of proper complaint procedures. Those preliminary findings resulted in the removal of East Haven Police Chief Len Gallo.

In May, the East Haven Board of Police Commissioners voted to ask the chief state’s attorney’s office to investigate the arrest of Father Manship.

Thomas MacMillan Photo At her grand opening party in East Haven on Wednesday, McMahon side-stepped the controversial issue, which has heightened tensions between East Haveners and Latino rights activists. McMahon continued a pattern she established early in her candidacy of declining to take a position on issues. At other times along the campaign trail, handlers have shielded her from talking to the press.

Asked about the appropriateness of the federal investigation into the East Haven police, McMahon said, “The federal Department of Justice?”

“You know, I’m really not familiar with that case. I’d really like to understand it and know more about it before I opined on it. I would really be speaking out of turn at this point,” she said.

Does she think racial profiling is a problem in East Haven?

“That I don’t know,” McMahon said. “But I can tell you racial profiling is wrong. It’s just absolutely wrong and we should not do it.”

McMahon declined to answer further questions about the federal probe.

“I really want to understand it better,” she said.

McMahon arrived at her new regional headquarters at around 6:30 p.m. She entered a room full of dozens of supporters and some Republican candidates for local offices. McMahon spent some time working the room, including signing WWE paraphernalia clutched in the eager grasp of young professional wrestling fans.

McMahon is the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, the mega-company that pits oiled muscle-men against one another in staged battles.

Addressing the crowded room, McMahon said she has her sights set on the general election, where she expects to face Democrat Attorney General Dick Blumenthal. But she’s not taking the primary for granted, she said. She’ll share the primary ballot with former U.S. Congressman Rob Simmons and financial analyst Peter Schiff.

“I just would like to blow it away,” McMahon said of the primary. She called upon her supporters to volunteer to make phone calls. Winning is going to take a real “grassroots” effort, she said.

She promised to serve for a maximum of two terms in the Senate. “I want to be your voice,” she said. “I’m not looking for another career.”

She said she’d chosen to open an office in East Haven because of its geographic placement. “East Haven is just such a good location to reach out,” she said. “We’ve got New Haven, North Haven and all the other places around.”

“...which has heightened tensions between East Haveners and Latino rights activists.”  That ambiguous clause seems to imply that Latino civil rights activists aren’t East Haveners or that all East Haveners stand in opposition to Latino civil rights activists.

I am sure McMahon had never been anywhere east of Fairfield County before she opened her office. Her ignorance of the police investigation in East Haven proves that she is out of touch with the issues and problems in the State of Connecticut and would be a horrible representive for its citizens. It seems she is a schill for big business and the monied interests in Greenwhich and Fairfield.

Interesting….

“She promised to serve for a maximum of two terms in the Senate. “I want to be your voice,” she said. “I’m not looking for another career.””

So 62 year old McMahon would only serve 2 terms (12 years)and be 74 guess she doesn’t want to retire at 80 or anything….

I at least appreciate that she doesn’t know much about it right now and is admitting that, rather than making some dumb comment. I’m sure she will be asked about it soon, and whether she is prepared then will be more telling. She can’t know every detail about everything.

Hey…look at the bright side. If “Linda” wins, we’ll have professional wrestling on CSPAN. Just think how entertaining future court nominee battles will be…

@kait

A skilled politician or public servant would have done her homework or at least have had a staffer do it for her. Two minutes reading the NHI would have been sufficient This sounds like someone who is running on talking points and money but not much more.

@Townie—“Her ignorance of the police investigation in East Haven proves that she is out of touch with the issues and problems in the State of Connecticut and would be a horrible representative for its citizens.” excellent comment and a point that needs to be hammered home about McMahon, she’s an in-state carpetbagger as it were

@kait—”...appreciate that she doesn’t know much about it right now and is admitting that, rather than making some dumb comment.” You’re right, there’s something to be said for not letting yourself speak out of turn and demonstrate incoherence and more politicians need to be given props for displaying true common sense.

yet Townie’s point is the real one. McMahon is poseur and expects to buy the senate seat. the fact that no one is calling this out is sad.

McMahon’s response exhibited a lot more honesty and integrity than Blumenthal’s responses about his ” Viet Nam service”, so all you Democrats who want to play ” gotcha” on one comment in a candidate’s campaign are are missing the big picture as Bill Clinotn would say ” its the economy stupid”

Ms. McMahon is absolutely right not to comment on this situation.  An allegation has been made, a police official dismissed, and an Federal investigation is underway.  The time to comment is after the report is issued.

I do not want my U.S. Senator making Al Sharpton/Tawana Brawley style allegations.

“But I can tell you racial profiling is wrong. It’s just absolutely wrong and we should not do it.”

A trenchant analysis and insightful answer from a candidate clearly in touch with the myriad issues affecting all of CT’s diverse communities.

You have no comment thread for a related story, “Blumie’s Lead Shrinks,” so I’ll post one here about that. According to the Q poll his lead went from 55-35 to 54-37. I read the Q-poll release itself and it doesn’t say whether this is a statistically significant change, but I think your headline should have been: “Blumie’s Lead Not As Large.” It is true that it has shrunk since he had a 41 point lead, but poll-wathchers know that that front-running candidates don’t start worrying until the top line dips under 50 percent. McMahon’s number is more a return to base among Republicans due to millions spent on advertising.

McMahon pushes herself as a businessperson who is an exemplar of what is good for the economy. More likely, she is an exemplar of what is good for the steroid industry who exploits her workers by labeling them as independent contractors not employees—making them ineligible for benefits in a grueling damaging to body and brain entertainment.

To cba- You’re right, McMahon’s comment was honest. It was an honest revelation of her ignorance about a serious issue facing a lot of communities in Connecticut; racial profiling and police corruption affects many towns and cities in this state, not just East Haven. She should know about the investigation and the problems that caused it. She should express her opinion about racial profiling and police misconduct. How else are we supposed to evaluate her for office? What she does do is make general rhetorical comments about the economy and creating jobs. But, I have yet to hear any concrete plan or idea on how to create jobs or lure business to Connecticut. As a Republican she should also be citing the Democrats’ errors, which she also hasn’t done. She is trying to sneak into office under a thin veil of pseudo-conservative rhetoric and pandering. Hopefully, she won’t succeed.

Linda McMahon’s candidacy is all “smoke and mirrors”...she is trying to buy the US senate seat and she is horrified at the prospect of having to face Peter Schiff at the August primary…

She also has recently claimed the WWE is a “soap opera” and not real?

1. BLOOD MONEY! So the Benoit family tragedy wasn’t real, McMahon?
2. So the signature pharmacy steroid scandal wasn’t real, McMahon?
3. BLOOD MONEY! So the many WWE superstars who died young due to drug and painkiller addictions developed while working through injuries FOR YOUR COMPANY weren’t real, McMahon?
4. So the concussions sustained by several WWE superstars (and a certain psychotic murderer) weren’t real then, McMahon?
5. So the “future endeavors” you wished on many aspiring superstars who were “too small” and “could never make it” unless they “BULKED UP” and “WORKED HURT” weren’t real, McMahon?
6. So the TV-G rating you encourage the WWE to use to COVER UP its past misdeeds (at ANY COST) while you try to steal a Senate seat isn’t real, McMahon?
7. Just HOW MANY skeletons do YOU have in your closet, McMahon?

McMahon will never truthfully answer these questions to the public.

As one blogger put it, “The WWE was nothing but a vile organization that did not produce “soap operas”, but sadomasochistic and misogynist garbage that was, quite simply, obscene.” Imagine the message sent to thousands of young, impressionable male fans that it was OK to sexually degrade women with such impunity.

And to Chris Healy (CT Republican Party Chairman whose wife is on the Linda McMahon payroll) and Ed Patru (Linda McMahon’s attorney)...premature deaths, steroid and other drug abuse, pornography and other sleaze are not an old story, it’s about character, and CT voters do care…Linda McMahon bought Healy out…I hope Peter Schiff destroys McMahon in the August primary and completely embarrasses Healy.

McMahon is an insult to any intelligent CT voter and to any Republican who cherishes family values, especially any self-respecting women and mothers…as an independent voter and educator, I would rather vote for Frankenstein than her.

There seems to be no mention of candidates Malloy and Lamont and their stand on the issue. And East Haven mayor April Capone Almon hasn’t said much lately, either.

I’ll say it again follow the law and you won’t be bother in east Haven! there’s a lot of whites/Spanish/ Blacks that have no problems at all here! you break the law you get what you deserve! I pay taxes and don’t want the town going to hell! your looking at a poll that was done with people given tickets only! not people stop! if you have everything legal your on your way! know the facts people! Mexican or not! you need a licences and registration anywhere!

Linda M claims to have created 500 jobs.  Has anyone checked on the health of her employees - how many are dying prematurely, have committed suicide, killed their family members while in full blown roid rage.  Does mass entertainment for ignorant idiots qualify one for the U.S. senate?

@George: Mrs. McMahon didn’t say she wouldn’t comment on an ongoing investigation - which I would agree with you would be an appropriate response. She said that she wasn’t familiar with the case, which is another example of her ignorance of a myriad of issues she has, both domestic and national.
