Medicaid Report Shows Successes, Gaps

Maritza Gant lost her healthcare coverage after divorcing her husband. After applying for Medicaid in October, she found she was able to keep her previous healthcare providers.

She is one of the people benefitting from the state’s expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act — allowing adults and children of a broader range of incomes to get health insurance.

A new report from New Haven’s Christian Community Action gathers community members’ firsthand stories about using the program — pinpointing its successes and issues.

About 80 to 90 percent of 140 respondents were happy with their new plans, but said they had trouble scheduling appointments at convenient times, getting test results and getting dental care. A third reported being unable to get all of their care in one location.

Aaron, who is a 26 year old man with Type 1 diabetes, received warnings from the Department of Social Services (DSS) warning him that he would lose coverage if he didn’t submit his paperwork — although he had already sent over his paystubs and tax returns.

The report recommends improving the connection between Access Health Connecticut and DSS, so participants like Aaron will not have to wait for crucial care. Other recommendations include increasing outreach to communities unlikely to be insured and providing the newly insured with more assistance navigating the health care system.
