Stratton’s Charges Nolled

Former New Haven Alder and prominent trial lawyer Michael Stratton popped back into town Wednesday to clear up some unfinished legal business — and left with a clean slate.

Stratton came to state Superior Court to go on trial for breach of peace and disorderly conduct charges stemming from a fight he had with his then-20-year-old girlfriend last June 13 inside the Kelly House apartment building. The state also charged him with assault based on a view of surveillance video, but dropped that charge.

In court, the state decided not to proceed with the case. Stratton’s attorney asked the judge, Patrick Clifford, to dismiss the remaining two charges. Instead, Clifford nolled the case. That means the charges will be wiped off Stratton’s record if he stays out of legal trouble for 13 months.

The June 13 incident coincided with a broader series of setbacks for Stratton, including the dissolution of his marriage, his separation from his Elm Street law firm, and his resignation from his position as a high-profile Prospect Hill alder after six months on the job.

If the legal standard is have a dispute with your loved one in public and be charged with a crime, anyone in a relationship longer than 30 days should be breaking rocks,” Stratton’s attorney, Norm Pattis, said Wednesday

Stratton stopped by the Independent after the court proceeding to report that he is going to be married to the woman with whom he had the June 13 alteration, a former Catwalk strip club bartender and dancer turned fashion model. He said they live in New York City now, where he has developed a federal immigration law practice. He also hopes to open a Cheshire office, he said.
