Will TV Go The Way Of The Dodo?

Michelle Turner wants to know: will television die with her generation?

It is a question that a few people have been asking in the past years. Several years ago, the Guardian made a prediction that TV would croak by the year 2017, which looks unlikely. More recently, buzz surrounding Netflix’s popularity, and a millennial interest in accessibility rather than ownership, have brought the issue into news syndicates, over news desks, and around dinner tables across the country.

Now, with a potential merger pending between WFSB, Hartford’s Channel 3 Eyewitness News, and WTNH, News Channel 8 in New Haven, it has also become a local issue. And according to Ben Bogardus, associate professor of journalism at Quinnipiac University and a guest on Michelle Turner’s The Show,” the answer is still no — but it’s complicated.

When it comes down to it, if you’re a company looking to advertise, TV is still the best way to do it. Online advertising — people will just ignore it … if you’re a company, there still s money in TV, because that is the best place to get your message out. for advertsers,” he said, adding that the proliferation of digital media was creating a sort of moving target for the television broadcast industry. It’s the last standing profitable media in that sense.”
