Cherry blossoms like those in 1915.

Three days in New Haven History have flown by on WNHH radio.

On This Day in Fighting The British History, hosts Allan Appel and Jason Bischoff-Wurstle time travel back to a year after the start of the revolution. General Tryon is landing troops in Westport and racing to burn the newly formed Continental Army’s depot in Danbury. Our generals Benedict Arnold and David Wooster get the word and march off to the defense. Wooster dies heroically, Arnold becomes a traitor a few years later, but we have Wooster Square named after our regional hero and the cherry blossoms are now blooming all around his marker. So much for elections in the present; It’s not primary day in 1915. On This Day In New Haven History,” a fancy new apartment building, dubbed New Haven House, is completed cheek by jowl with the recently completed Shubert Theater. Finally a fine state-of-the-art playhouse and now the most modern and beautiful Renaissance Italy-inspired hotel nearby stand on College Street. Had the British not been defeated, who knows what might be there today? Pubs? Parliament? To find out, click on or download the audio above.

This Day In New Haven Commemorating History time-travels back to 1915 where we join a venerable group marking the jubilee or 50th anniversary of the Confederate surrender at Appomattox, ending the Civil War. Muse along with hosts Allan Appel and the New Haven Museum’s Jason Bischoff-Wurstle as they ponder how a civil war is different from a revolution like the one of 1776. To listen, click on or download the audio above.
