Parents, Teachers Blast School Closures

At a school finance meeting on Monday, Board of Education members asked Superintendent Carol Birks to consider closing six elementary schools across the city, after alders look ready to flat-line next year’s funding. Parents and teachers from NHPS Advocates responded in a statement, asking the board to explain the decision and maintain magnet schools.

The volunteers of NHPS Advocates are alarmed by the Finance and Operations Committee’s surprise request for the Superintendent to consider closing or consolidating six elementary schools. The suggested schools are all assets to the district, and most are magnets. Further, this item did not appear on the publicly posted agenda.

We are concerned that targeting this bundle of schools, together with the closure of Creed, could advance recent local, state, and federal efforts to undermine magnet schools and public education. Funded in part by state and federal taxes, strong magnet schools have long been a mechanism for school desegregation and a hedge against the charter school industry in New Haven and elsewhere. Closing some magnet schools could be a first step in reducing the number and quality of New Haven Public Schools serving our students and their families.

We call upon the members of the Board of Education to give a rationale for this particular selection of schools and to continue their commitment to transparency by formally ending the practice of adding surprise amendments to public meeting agendas.
