Five people were temporarily displaced after a kitchen fire broke out at 80 Essex Street.
The fire caused moderate smoke, fire and water damage, but there were no injuries.
Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Marcarelli says that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Robn: Many fire department responses start out as a smell of smoke and often because of the quick response when arriving they find a careless cooking incident that is quickly taken care of. Many times what starts out as a minor kitchen incident turns into a major fire as the flames quickly spread upward engulfing the entire room and beyond. Smoke detectors will activate in a fire incident as long as the detector is working and there is someone there to make the call to 911, otherwise, it becomes a working fire. Over the years the number of careless cooking incidents have been reduced because of the NHFD's public fire education program that starts in the schools.
What percentage of NHFD calls are for kitchen incidents?
